Chief of Staff Recruitment
A great Chief of Staff can create something many CEOs and senior executives are increasingly short of: Capacity.
The role can provide a trusted strategic partner at the centre of the organisation, helping a CEO or Executive team turn priorities into action, improve alignment, drive critical initiatives and ensure important decisions don't disappear into the demands of day-to-day leadership.
But Chief of Staff roles vary enormously. Hiring successfully starts with being clear about the problem you need the role to solve.

What does a Chief of Staff do?
A Chief of Staff typically works alongside a CEO, founder or senior Executive to improve organisational effectiveness and accelerate delivery of their most important priorities.
Depending on the mandate, they may coordinate strategic initiatives, improve Executive and Board rhythms, connect functions, prepare decisions, track delivery, remove blockers and act as a trusted sounding board to the CEO.
The best Chiefs of Staff often achieve this without direct authority, making judgement, influence, credibility and the ability to navigate complex stakeholder relationships particularly important. That's consistent with both current UK appointments and the experiences Chiefs of Staff themselves describe
When should you hire a Chief of Staff?
A Chief of Staff may be the right appointment when:
- The CEO is becoming a bottleneck and needs greater capacity.
- Strategic priorities are agreed but execution across functions is inconsistent.
- A growing or transforming organisation needs stronger alignment around the Executive team.
- Important cross-functional initiatives lack a natural owner.
- The CEO needs a trusted partner who can move between strategy, operations, people and delivery.
- The organisation needs additional leadership capacity but does not necessarily need another functional C-suite appointment.

Chief of Staff, COO or Chief Transformation Officer?
A Chief of Staff is often right when the CEO needs greater capacity, alignment and support turning strategic priorities into action.
A Chief Operating Officer is more appropriate where the organisation needs a senior Executive with direct accountability for operational performance, delivery and potentially significant teams and budgets.
A Chief Transformation Officer may be needed where there is a defined enterprise-wide change mandate requiring dedicated leadership, governance and accountability across a complex transformation.
Titles matter less than the mandate. Before recruiting, define what needs to change, what the individual will own, where they need authority and what success should look like.
What makes a successful Chief of Staff?
The strongest Chiefs of Staff are not simply highly organised. They combine commercial judgement, emotional intelligence, influence and execution.
They need to understand what matters to the CEO while retaining enough independence to challenge thinking, navigate competing priorities and build credibility across the wider leadership team.
Depending on the organisation, successful candidates can come from Strategy, Consulting, Transformation, Operations, Corporate Development or other senior functional backgrounds. The right background depends heavily on the mandate rather than the title alone. Current UK Chief of Staff roles similarly span strategy, financial and commercial insight, governance, operations, communications and cross-functional execution.

Recruiting the right Chief of Staff
Chief of Staff recruitment starts with defining the mandate. We work with CEOs, founders and leadership teams to understand the organisational challenge first: what needs to be achieved, where additional capacity is required and how the Chief of Staff will interact with the Executive team and Board.
We then identify and assess individuals against the outcomes required, looking beyond job titles to find candidates with the judgement, credibility, adaptability and delivery experience to succeed.
For a role built so heavily around trust and influence, leadership fit matters just as much as functional experience. In this aritcle, "From the West Wing to the Boardroom" we introduce the Chief of Staff further
