The Question Every Aspiring NED Should Be Able To Answer
2 July 2026
The Investor backed leadership trigger points founders should recognise as Utilities and Infrastructure businesses scale.
Technically strong founding teams can secure investment, but scaling into a commercially resilient, governed business often requires a different layer of leadership capability.
The transformation sweeping across the UK utilities and infrastructure sector has created one of the most demanding leadership landscapes in the market. Private equity and venture capital investors continue to back organisations promising innovation and long term value creation, yet many businesses face early challenges when the founding team lacks the leadership capability required to scale. Strong technical ideas may secure investment. Turning those ideas into a commercially resilient, well-governed organisation requires a different type of experience.
Early leadership choices matter…
In capital intensive, regulated environments, early missteps can be costly, whether a business is developing grid scale storage, rolling out digital infrastructure or building a specialist utilities services platform, investors expect disciplined governance, clear performance visibility and a credible operating model from day one. Without the right leadership in place, founding teams often find themselves stretched thin, which slows progress and reduces investor confidence.
Early appointments shape culture, decision making and delivery capability. Bringing in seasoned executives at the right moment allows founders to maintain strategic clarity while building operational depth. This is why many investors look favourably on businesses that take a structured approach to leadership from the outset. Firms that partner with specialist search consultancies often achieve this more effectively. At Douglas Jackson, for example, all retained searches supported by our Impact 360 Process have been completed successfully and 96% of placements remain in post after twelve months, which highlights the value of getting these decisions right early.
The leadership challenge unique to the Utilities and wider Infrastructure sector
Utilities and infrastructure businesses operate at the intersection of engineering, regulation and public responsibility. Leaders must balance commercial urgency with operational discipline. They need the credibility to engage with regulators and stakeholders, while still moving with the pace expected of an investor backed scale up.
Founders with strong technical or project backgrounds may not yet have experience building functions, designing governance frameworks or scaling teams. This is where external leadership capability becomes vital. When aligned carefully, incoming executives complement the strengths of the founding team and accelerate organisational maturity. The most effective appointments also support diversity of thought and background. 57% of Douglas Jackson’s hires have been from diverse groups, reflecting both market need and the strategic value of broadening leadership perspectives.
What investor Backed Leadership looks like …
In investor backed utilities and infrastructure businesses, leadership expectations are shaped by the need to deliver value quickly and sustainably. Investors typically prioritise:
- Operational maturity: Leaders who build robust systems that ensure safe and compliant delivery
- Commercial clarity: A clear route from market opportunity to predictable revenue
- Stakeholder strength: Confidence when engaging regulators, local authorities and investment partners
- Scalable leadership behaviours: The ability to build cohesive teams and foster high performance
- Strategic adaptability: Sound judgement in response to policy change or regulatory shifts
Founding teams that proactively strengthen their leadership capability show investors that they understand the demands of the sector and are prepared for growth.
When is the right time to introduce external leadership?
The timing of senior hires is as important as the choice of individuals. Common trigger points include:
- The shift from development to delivery
- Preparation for a significant fundraising event
- Expansion into new geographies or service lines
- The introduction of more formal governance and reporting
- Situations where founders become stretched across competing priorities
External executives do not replace founders. Instead they create the foundations for scale, often accelerating the organisation’s ability to secure investment and execute its growth strategy. I wrote about The Founder’s Dilemma earlier this year.
The value of a well-structured search process
Strong leadership is one of the clearest predictors of success for PE and VC backed utilities and infrastructure businesses. The right appointments strengthen investor confidence, support disciplined growth and help founders focus on innovation and long term value creation. In a sector where the competition for leadership talent is intense, taking a structured and early approach to senior hiring can make the difference between meeting investor expectations and falling short of them.
In a recent search for a Managing Director appointment the Senior Partner of the Private Equity firm said “Thank you for all your help Holly, we were quite impressed with the quality of candidates for this posititon”
