Empathy and Vulnerability in Utilities Leadership
19 March 2024Hydrogen – The Net Zero Unsung Hero?

I had the pleasure of attending another in-person WUN event, hosted at WSP’S Birmingham offices at the Mailbox. This was a great opportunity to learn more about both the current and future Hydrogen landscape and it’s importance in the journey to Net Zero.
Hearing from an inspiring panel, including Hydrogen UK and Cadent Gas‘ Dr Angie Needle, WSP‘s Rhian Jones, Associate with the Gas and Hydrogen team and Chia Nwajagu, Senior Regulatory Analyst, Ørsted; it was such an interesting insight into the sheer potential and exciting future of hydrogen and how this energy source will support the global goals for achieving Net Zero.
During the session, there were a number of educational pieces, and discussions around how we are able to utilise existing networks to support the safe introduction of hydrogen into the gas network. The groundwork that has gone into both the engineering and health and safety aspects to date is astronomical, but what struck me the most, was the passion of the 80 delegates in the room who wanted to know more about how to support the growth of the knowledge and understanding of the hydrogen world.
There seems to be a common misconception about working in the Net Zero space. You certainly don’t need to take the Engineering route…who knew? There is frankly an abundance of roles available across so many different businesses; the Gas Network companies, consultants exploring and designing the possibilities available to transition to Net Zero and with Renewables companies themselves.
